Statement

The internet has provided my firm with quick and cost-effective access to information and a means to communicate and transmit information and documents efficiently to clients and opposing counsel. All time tracking is simultaneously inputted into the system, which allows billing to be concluded promptly after a closing. E-mailing clients several times a day during transactional negotiations saves time and isn’t as dependent on schedules that coincide. This promotes more responsiveness to clients, faster turn-around and flexibility to my practice.

The web is certainly a valuable resource, but with its expansion of information, it can be overwhelming and cumbersome. The NYSBA could help sole practitioners like myself by providing:

• access to other practitioners who may help to guide to a helpful resource or participate in a discussion group
• forms not easily obtainable
• better access to legal research
• more continuing legal education via the internet
• e-mail newsletters within areas of specialties
• information on new technology that may be helpful in serving our clients and interacting with bar members, such as virtual meetings

Biography

Alisa M. Dalton is an attorney in private practice in Saratoga Springs, New York. Alisa has a general practice, with a focus on business and non-profit law, especially mergers, acquisitions, sales and start-ups, real estate, advice to physicians, nurses and other professionals, and employment and other contractual arrangements. She graduated from Georgetown University (with a junior year in London) and worked on Capitol Hill in the House of Representatives and the Senate, both during and after college. As a summer associate and after attending law school at Villanova University, she worked at Thacher Proffitt in the World Trade Center in the asset-based financing and corporate departments. She then worked at Fox, Horan & Camerini in downtown Manhattan, counselling U.S. and non-U.S. businesses and individuals in many forms of corporate and business matters in the United States and internationally. Her New York experience ranged from representing evolving entrepreneurial businesses to team representation of large financial institutions. For one year while working at Fox, Horan & Camerini, she worked in Italy as counsel, by fax and modem and most importantly, before access to the internet or e-mail. After living in Italy, Alisa moved to the Albany area and practiced with Hinman, Straub, one of the oldest continuing health care law practices in New York. Working in the corporate, real estate, pension and estate areas, Alisa provided transactional expertise for practice transitions, among other things. Alisa’s current client base includes web start-up companies, physicians, nurses and other professionals, real estate investors and other entrepreneurs and non-profit corporations and foundations, as well as many individuals seeking general legal advice. Alisa was born in the Philadelphia area and now lives in Saratoga Springs.
