Statement
I am interested in NYSBA
allowing myself and others to continue to serve as explorers
in the use of technology in the practice of law. I envision a
NYSBA “Skunkworks”1 , where we get to try and test the latest
and greatest toys the tech folks have to offer.
If NYSBA is to be as agile as
its needs to be (imagine turning “The Titanic”); the
organization must also foster members and staff in forming
electronic communities that allow for a sense of playing
outside the lines.
I recommend reading the first
chapter of the “Cluetrain Manifesto” by Christopher Locke at:
http://www.cluetrain.com/apocalypso.html
Locke offers the best
explanation I’ve seen of how the internet as a medium has
affected it message and messengers, especially in large
organizations. The chapter, entitled “Internet Apocalyso” is
worth reading for Locke’s breezy “gonzo” style and his
insights into the need for large organizations to allow their
people to enhance their creativity by playing with the
technology.

1“A skunkworks is a group
of people who, in order to achieve unusual results,
work on a project in a way that is outside the usual rules. A
skunkworks is often a
small team that assumes or is given responsibility for
developing something in a
short time with minimal management constraints. Typically, a
skunkworks has a
small number of members in order to reduce communications
overhead. A
skunkworks is sometimes used to spearhead a product design
that thereafter will be
developed according to the usual process. A skunkworks project
may be secret.”
